PRO COUNSELING™
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a feeling of worry or fear that can be mild or intense. It’s like your brain’s way of responding to stress or potential danger, even if there isn’t an immediate threat. Everyone feels anxious sometimes, like before a big test or a job interview, but when these feelings happen often and get in the way of daily life, it might be a sign of an anxiety disorder. The good news is that there are ways to manage anxiety, and talking to someone about it can really help.
Therapy can help reduce anxiety symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Types of Anxiety
There are various types of anxiety disorders, each with unique characteristics. Understanding these differences helps in tailoring effective treatment to manage and alleviate symptoms.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD involves unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive actions (compulsions) that you feel you must do. If you have OCD, you might feel stuck in a cycle of these thoughts and actions, which can be very stressful and disrupt your daily life. You can benefit from OCD therapy by learning coping mechanisms and tools to self-soothe and reduce the need for compulsions.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Social Anxiety Disorder is a strong fear of being judged in social situations. If you have social anxiety, you might feel extremely nervous and avoid social interactions, which can make you feel isolated and affect your relationships. Social Anxiety Therapy can help you feel more comfortable and confident in social situations, reducing your fear and improving your interactions with others.
Panic Attack Disorder
Panic Disorder includes sudden panic attacks—intense periods of fear or discomfort. If you have panic disorder, you might constantly worry about having another attack, leading you to avoid places or situations where you think an attack might happen. Panic disorder treatment can help you manage and reduce the frequency of panic attacks, giving you greater control and peace of mind.
Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia is the fear of being in places where escape might be hard or help might not be available if you panic. If you have agoraphobia, you might feel anxious about leaving your home, being in crowds, or traveling, limiting your social life. Agoraphobia Treatment can help you gradually face your fears, regain independence, and participate more freely in daily activities.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) involves constant worry about many aspects of daily life. If you have GAD, you might feel always on edge, restless, and unable to relax, with physical symptoms like headaches and trouble sleeping. Generalized Anxiety Disorder treatment can help you manage excessive worry, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being.

What does anxiety look like?
Anxiety can feel like a combination of psychological and physical symptoms that can negatively impact your daily life and ability to cope with stress. Anxiety often creates feelings of tenseness, nervousness, uncontrollable worrying, and the inability to relax and be present in the moment. Anxiety can create a feeling of dread and or fear.
What can be the cause of anxiety?
The cause of anxiousness differs for each individual. The main factors to explore are social and environmental, personality, biological, physical health, and stress.
Social and environmental factors include social isolation, childhood trauma, negative life events, societal pressures, and lack of mental health resources.
Personality traits of those who are high performing, high achievers, perfectionism as well as shy may be more prone to anxiety.
Family history also has an impact on one’s level of anxiety due to genetics and the nature of relationships.

Stressful life situations such as work stress, life transitions, financial concerns, or everyday stressors can intensify anxiety.
What type of therapy helps with anxiety?
Research has proven that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT is a highly effective form of treating anxiety disorder. Through CBT, clients can be helped to identify and manage factors that contribute to anxiety. By challenging/reframing thought patterns they can reduce the likelihood and intensity. With the behavioral component, clients learn techniques to reduce desired behaviors associated with anxiety disorders.
How long will it take for me to feel better and be less anxious?
Clients have shared an immediate feeling of relief when being validated, understood, and supported in therapy. It is important to recognize, acknowledge, and investigate the “root” cause of feelings to decrease symptoms and nurture new behaviors.
